Liverpool will be out to continue their blistering Premier League form this weekend when they host Watford – live on talkSPORT.
Jurgen Klopp’s side go into Saturday’s lunchtime clash at Anfield sitting eight points clear of nearest challengers Leicester, having won 15 of their 16 games this season, and drawn the other
Last weekend’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth stretched Liverpool’s unbeaten league run to 33 – the best record of any Reds side in the club’s 127-year history.
The last time Liverpool tasted defeat in the league was against Manchester City on January 3, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal currently hold the record for the longest unbeaten run of matches in Premier League history.
Arsene Wenger’s Gunners went 49 games without tasting defeat between 2003 and 2005 before they were eventually stopped by their great rivals of the time – Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.
If Liverpool continue their frightening form, they could emulate the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ of 2003/04, when they went the entire season unbeaten.
Longest unbeaten runs in Premier League history
5. Manchester United – 29 matches ( December 26, 1998 – September 25, 1999; April 11, 2010 – February 5, 2011)
3. Manchester City – 30 matches (April 8, 2017 – January 2, 2018)
3. Liverpool – 33 matches (January 12, 2019 – present)
2. Chelsea – 40 (
1. Arsenal – 49 (
It is set to get a lot harder for Liverpool to keep up their unbeaten run as they do battle in FIVE competitions over the next few months, juggling their league commitments with the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup.
But they look untouchable in the league right now and it will take some side to beat Klopp’s men, who are 14 points ahead of reigning champions Manchester City right now.
If the Merseysiders continue to avoid defeat, they could equal Arsenal’s record of 49 games unbeaten when they face City at the Etihad Stadium on April 4, 2020.
Get through the City clash without defeat and Liverpool would then have the chance to surpass Arsenal and make it 50 games unbeaten when they face Aston Villa at Anfield the following week.
