West Ham’s new signing Roberto had a first interview to forget.
The veteran goalkeeper has put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal and will officially join Manuel Pellegrini’s side when his Espanyol contract expires this month.
Speaking to the club’s in-house media team, the veteran goalkeeper left fans amused when he described the Hammers as ‘nothing impressive’.
He said: “From the beginning, I knew I was going to come here.
“I was very excited to get a new experience. I consider this a big step in my career.”
So far, so good… before Roberto added: “Everyone who follows football knows the importance of this club. Nothing impressive, but really exciting.”
However, it was a simple slip of the tongue as the Spaniard is still learning English.
On Instagram, he said: “Sorry.. I need to improve my english a lil bit more. I didn’t want to say with that meaning [sic]. In Spanish the meaning is different.”
We’re sure West Ham fans won’t hold it against him.
Roberto will be competing with West Ham’s No.1 Lukasz Fabianski for a starting place next season.
Fellow new signing David Martin, who helped Millwall preserve their Championship status last term, is expected to be the Hammers’ third-choice goalkeeper.
