SEOUL – South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Sunday that Japan and South Korea need to follow a path of cooperation in line with the 1998 joint declaration.
Moon made the remarks in a statement issued on Twitter and other media on the 10th anniversary of the death of former President Kim Dae-jung.
Kim provided a guidepost for the path of friendship and cooperation between Japan and South Korea, Moon said.
Moon praised the 1998 joint declaration for clarifying Japan’s deep remorse and heartfelt apology for causing tremendous damage and suffering to South Korean people during its 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
The declaration was a promise that the people of the two countries will share the lessons of bilateral history and open a future of peace of prosperity, he said.
Moon also spoke highly of the late president for achieving the first summit ever between North and South Korea, in 2000. Kim opened a new horizon of peace for the Korean Peninsula and represented conscience that forever affects the hearts of the people, Moon said.
