Now, an official probe has substantiated the findings of Forensic Science Laboratory – which suggested that the renovation was a lacklustre effort by the Oreva group.

Company only spent a fraction of budget
The police investigation into the Morbi bridge tragedy has revealed that Oreva group – primarily a clock manufacturing company – lacked the required expertise to carry out the infrastructure project.

Owing to their inexperience, the market leader in the clock industry had further subcontracted the job to Dhrangadhra-based firm DevPrakash Solutions.
The documents seized from DevPrakash Solutions further revealed that the company only spent Rs 12 lakh or 6% of the allotted Rs 2 crore budget sanctioned for repair and maintenance of the bridge.
Sources privy to the probe told the Times of India that the developers took a ‘çosmetic’ approach during the repair works. The bridge was painted, greased and other superficial upgrades were made instead of it undergoing the required strengthening process.
Oreva chairman took a stroll to check the strength
On October 24, Jaysukh Patel, the Oreva group chairman, announced that the bridge was ready and safe to be reopened on Gujarati New Year.
He had declared that the six-month rehaul job was finished.
The developing probe report has also revealed that the only physical test of the carriageway was a stroll Patel and his family took across it before it was opened to the public.
