School Stabbing: 9th-Grade Boy Charged With Attempted Murder, Mayhem

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A ninth-grade boy has been charged with attempted murder and mayhem in a stabbing last week at Northgate High School, Walnut Creek police said Monday.

The boy is accused of stabbing a ninth-grade girl in what police called a “violent assault.” The school on Castle Rock Road called the Walnut Creek Police Department around 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, and reported that a student was injured in a stabbing.

“Walnut Creek Police Department officers and detectives arrived, detained the student believed to be responsible, and quickly determined this was an isolated incident between two students,” police Lt. Holley Connors said in a news release.

The boy was taken to Contra Costa Juvenile Hall and was held without bail.

The girl was rushed to a local hospital and by the following day was in stable condition, according to police. As of Tuesday, she was recovering at home, Connors told members of the media.

Detectives presented the case to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office last week; on Monday, WCPD announced the boy was formally charged with attempted murder and mayhem.

He remained in custody at Juvenile Hall, police said.

Authorities have not disclosed his name because of his age, nor any information on what may have led to the incident.

The suspect and the victim were acquaintances and no other students were involved, according to the Mt. Diablo Unified School District.
