Premier League introducing head-to-head rule for 2019/20 campaign if teams finish level at end of season

The Premier League is introducing a new head-to-head rule for the 2019/20 season.

This means there will be a new way of deciding where teams which end the campaign level on points will finish in the table, with their results against each home and away other compared.

The Premier League revealed how the new rule will be used ahead of the upcoming campaign.

It will mean if two or more clubs finish level on points when competing for the title, Champions League or Europa League places, or when relegation is at stake, their records in head-to-head matches will now be used to separate them.

Here's how the opening weekend of the Premier League will get under way for the 2019/20 season

In previous seasons, teams who finish on the same number of points, goal difference and number of goals would have to take part in a one-off playoff match to determine which club finishes higher.

That eventuality is now more unlikely because of this new rule.

Head-to-head records will be used as a decideer in the 2019/20 season if sides end level on points, goal difference and number of goals scored.

If clubs still cannot be separated then the side who scored the most away goals in those head-to-head matches will get the higher position.

Only then will a playoff be arranged to determine final league positions.
