Nestled in the lush Parvati valley amid shimmering snow-capped mountains in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh lies the tiny village of Malana, 9,500 ft above sea level. Home to some 2,000 people, the village has since the 1980s attracted hordes of foreign tourists looking to get high on Malana Cream, considered the best hashish or cannabis resin in the world.
The villagers have been growing cannabis for hundreds of years, unaware that they were doing anything illegal until the government cracked down on them. In recent times, they have come in the eye of a storm due to the Indian government’s ban on the production and consumption of cannabis. Law-enforcement agencies have been carrying out drives to uproot cannabis cultivation from the region. As part of its 100-day action plan, the Himachal Pradesh police recently seized more than 920kg of narcotics and booked 256 persons, including a foreigner, for allegedly smuggling drugs in the state.
