Newcastle United transfer news: Steve Bruce ‘interested’ in bringing Andy Carroll back to St James’ Park

Andy Carroll could make a sensational return to Newcastle, according to reports.

The boyhood Magpies fan started his career with the north east club before his £35million transfer to Liverpool on January transfer deadline day in 2011.

The striker is currently without a club after being released by West Ham United at the end of last season.

The Chronicle report that new Newcastle boss Steve Brice is interested in bringing Carroll back to St James’ Park but wants him to first prove his fitness.

The 30-year-old has suffered a number of injury problems over recent seasons.

He is reportedly currently working with a personal fitness consultant after the Hammers opted not to extend his deal at the club.

Bruce is thought to have already made checks on his fitness status.

Carroll is yet to make a decision on his future but he is understood to have offers from clubs abroad.

The striker scored 33 goals in 91 appearances for the club before his transfer, this included 17 goals in their Championship promotion winning season.

He struggled to recapture that form with Liverpool and with West Ham as he suffered numerous fitness problems.
