Newcastle transfer news: Rafael Benitez ‘wants to sign’ former Magpies loanee Salomon Rondon for his new side Dalian Yifang in China

Rafael Benitez is reportedly targeting a move for striker Salomon Rondon to try and entice him to China.

Benitez brought Rondon on loan to Newcastle last season from West Brom and the Spaniard is thought to have consistently pushed to sign him on a permanent basis.

Owner Mike Ashley is believed to have been reluctant to spend money on a player who is rapidly approaching 30.

The Baggies are keen to offload the Venezuelan as they cannot afford to keep him, with West Ham rumoured to be interested along with the Magpies.

Benitez was recently named as manager of Chinese side Dalian Yifang after allowing his contract to expire with Newcastle.

The Mail Online reports that Benitez wants Rondon to join him in China and West Brom are willing to strike a deal.

The new Dalian boss, who will earn an estimated £12million-a-year, sees the Venezuela international as the ideal centre-forward to build his team around.

The striker scored 12 times for Newcastle last season and was a popular player with the fans.

West Brom signed Rondon from Zenit St Petersburg in 2014 for a club record fee of £12million.

He has also had spells playing for Rubin Kazan and Malaga before heading to the Premier League.
