Brumbies backrower Locky McCaffrey will stay in Canberra for another season after inking a new deal through to 2020.
McCaffrey has been in a rich vein of form this season, with his tireless work at the breakdown pivotal for the
The backrower has battled with injury in recent weeks but returned via club rugby last weekend and is expected to be named to take on the Sunwolves.
McCaffrey has barely put a foot wrong since coming back to Canberra from a stint in the English Premiership and with David Pocock confirming his Super Rugby retirement this week, the no. 8 has become even more valuable.
“I’m very happy to have extended my deal with the club,” McCaffrey said.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time back in Canberra with the Brumbies. I’m enjoying my rugby and want to continue to help the Brumbies to be successful
“The atmosphere and culture of this group, both on and off the field, is amazing and we are all pulling for each other and working hard to help bring another Super Rugby championship to the Brumbies and our supporters.”
“Canberra is a fantastic place to raise a family and I am looking forward to doing that with my partner Tash and our new arrival, baby Harper.”
“Locky is a senior player in our team and is now part of the leadership group,” Head Coach Dan McKellar commented. “He brings a lot of qualities on the field, as well as off it. He drives standards and accountability in both games and training.
“Locky is a very natural footballer with a point of difference. He has tremendous skill for a backrower and sees space and opportunity on the field very well. They are all qualities that suit the way we now play at the Brumbies.”
McCaffrey joins Rob Valetini and Tom Cusack as backrowers who have re-committed to the club, though Cusack will not feature in 2020 after inking a split deal with the Aussie Sevens ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
The Brumbies take on the Sunwolves on Saturday June 1 in Tokyo, kicking off at 3;15pm AEST, LIVE on FOX SPORTS, Kayo Sports and via RUGBY.com.au RADIO.
