His words transcribed in L’Équipe, the Argentine pointed to the psychological impact of conceding two goals either side of half-time, with Gaëtan Laborde and Flavien Tait scoring in the 45th and 46th minutes respectively.

“We didn’t start the game well, we had 25-30 where we played with quality. It’s a shame we didn’t make the most of that. We had two psychological blows – right before half-time and right after. After that, the match was open even if we created opportunities. We had trouble afterwards. The opposition grew in confidence – on our end, there was frustration.”

“Just as when we beat Manchester City, it’s a collective question [regarding Neymar’s performance]. It’s the same here. I am the one primarily responsible. What we did for 25 minutes was of high quality, we have to be able to extend that to over 90 minutes. The psychological impact of the two goals at key moments was important. I am satisfied with one sector, in that we created many chances.”

“Nobody likes losing. Without wanting to under-estimate Rennes, we are frustrated and disappointed that we didn’t convert our chances and conceded those goals. These situations leave us bitter and disappointed.”
