Manchester United news: Decision to make Axel Tuanzebe captain against Rochdale ‘not met with universal approval’

The decision to hand the captain’s armband to Axel Tuanzebe for the Carabao Cup clash against Rochdale was reportedly not met with universal approval in the Manchester United dressing room.

The 21-year-old centre-back was made captain for the night by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they went on to scrape through on penalties.

Tuanzebe grew up in Rochdale after moving from DR Congo when he was four.

He has also shown his leadership qualities throughout his time at the club as he has captained every age group prior to leading out the senior side.

But after the game Solskjaer was forced to explain why he decided not to give the armband to the more experienced Paul Pogba, who was also in the starting XI.

And the Daily Mail claim some parts of the dressing room did not agree with the move to make young Tuanzebe captain for the day.

The report suggests that manager Solskjaer and assistant Mike Phelan want individuals to take responsibility and be leaders on the pitch for Manchester United.

They also want to see who is mentally strong enough.

Tuanzebe is seen as an important part of the club’s future as he recently signed a new long-term contract extension.

Villa were thought to be keen on signing him again on loan for their first season back in the top flight but United did not want him to go, as Solskjaer believed he could play an important part for them this season.
