WESTFIELD, NJ — A more inclusive playground is coming to Franklin Elementary School this school year, funded by Project Playground.
The newly renovated spaces at the playground will include eight new pieces of accessible equipment with special surfacing, a student-designed mural, pathways, benches, and tables.

Project Playground is an initiative established in December 2022 by Westfield parents to examine how to bring more accessible playgrounds to Westfield.
Since Project Playground was established in December 20222, they have now raised more than $400,000 for accessible playground updates at Lincoln, Franklin, and Jefferson schools. Updates at Lincoln and Franklin schools were completed last fall.

“We are grateful to the generous businesses, school PTOs and community organizations who have donated to this worthy effort. Most recently the Westfield Foundation who donated $20,000 toward the Franklin playground project,” said Westfield Board of Education member Charles Gelinas.
The new equipment at Franklin will be installed during this 2024-25 school year.
While the Franklin playground has reached about 90 percent of its target fundraising goal, the organization is continuing to raise money to support the installation of a student designed mural in partnership with Westfield High School students.
