Frank Lampard confirms to talkSPORT he DID tell Chelsea players at half-time they would draw 4-4 with Ajax in Champions League thriller

Frank Lampard correctly predicted the final score of Chelsea’s stunning match with Ajax at half-time – telling his players they could draw 4-4 with the Dutch giants.

In an epic evening of Champions League football at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea staged an incredible fight back having trailed 4-1 to earn a point as Reece James equalised against the nine man visitors, who had both Daley Blind and Joel Veltman sent off.

Cesar Azpilicueta thought he’d made it 5-4 but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for handball

The result leaves Chelsea second in Group H, level on points with Ajax and Valenica, who they travel to face on matchday five.

Few would have predicted such a result before the game, and even during it – but Lampard believed a 4-4 draw WAS on the cards.

In fact, he revealed to Chelsea’s official website that he told his players at half-time that the comback was on.

“I’m relieved from the position of half-time,” said Lampard. “I told the players at half-time I thought we could draw the game 3-3, win it 4-3 or it might be 4-4.”

And, joining talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, Super Frank has explained just why he gave such a half-time team talk.

“Yeah, I did [say that],” said Lampard to Jim White. “In the first half there were moments that went against us – the two own goals – and then a bit of bad decisions from us, so there were moments that were definitely on us.

“But other than that I just felt we were quite dangerous; Christian Pulisic was getting in dangerous areas and Willian is always a danger, so I felt like if we moved the ball like we have recently, with more quality, it was there for us.

“I didn’t want to give the lads a negative feel as their heads were down a bit, so I just wanted them to feel they could believe because even after last night we still had two more games left.

“So it was just one of those to try and lift them. But as I said, it was the boys who actually went out there and changed the tone of the game.”
