A representative with Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital tells PEOPLE they have received three patients from the shooting: one person who is in critical condition and two others who were in serious and fair condition. Other information about their injuries was not available.
Chief Barberini said that while the investigation continues, police do not yet know what kind of weapon was used and he could not confirm the circumstances of the shooting. The relationship between the shooter and the victims, if any, was unclear.
YouTube employees are being interviewed by detectives, Barberini said. Multiple agencies remain on the scene.
YouTube employee Vadim Lavrusik posted on Twitter that he was at the office on Tuesday. “Heard shots and saw people running while at my desk,” he wrote. “Now barricaded inside a room with coworkers.”
Minutes later Lavrusik wrote to say that he had been “evacuated” and was okay.
A woman who was near YouTube’s offices during the shooting described a tumultuous aftermath as authorities swarmed the area.
“There were a lot of people in the streets watching everything going on, but they cleared the streets,” says the woman, a 40-year-old who lives in San Bruno and who asked not to be identified by name.
“We were scared,” the woman says. “We thought somebody was coming into the store where we were.”
The woman says that that in their supermarket, around the corner from YouTube, they quickly encountered people leaving the scene. “At the beginning a man came in with scratches on his face,” she says. “We thought he was the shooter but he wasn’t — he said he fell when he was running away.”
In a brief statement on Twitter, YouTube’s parent company, Google, wrote that it was “coordinating with authorities and will provide official information here from Google and YouTube as it becomes available.”
In a later post, Google wrote: “Our Security team has been working closely with authorities to evacuate the buildings and ensure the safety of employees in the area.”
A spokesman with the FBI’s office in San Francisco says the bureau is monitoring the situation but he did not know if agents had responded to the scene, as San Bruno police were leading the investigation given that the site was a private business.
However, the spokesman stressed, the situation was fast evolving and the FBI could become more involved if needed or if asked to do so.
President Donald Trump said he had been “briefed on the shooting” and expressed his condolences via social media.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved,” he wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene.”
