DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — The Delco accent hit the big time over the past few years, largely thanks to Kate Winslet’s role in the hit HBO series “Mare of Easttown,” which clued the nation, and even world, into the unique regional accent.
And Director of Strength and Conditioning at Ivy Rehab in Newtown Square Rob Rabena, a Delco native himself, asked his clients to give him their best Delco accent.
Rabena, who also is an adjunct professor in Widener University’s Physical Therapy Department, captured his clients doing their best take on the accent in a now widely seen Instagram video.

In the video, Rabena had them all read the same sentence, and the sentence is incredibly Delco: “I’m walking home from Wawa and I got a hoagie, water, and a bagel.”
The results varied, but Rabena said he has a few favorites.

Sammy from Wallingford and Gianna from Marple stood out the most to him.
“The most accurate is Gianna,” he said. “Sammy is a fun one.”
He also said Gabby from Marple’s accent is one of the most authentic in the video.
Some of the people in the video played up the accent a bit, he said, calling out Alex from Newtown Square.

But it was all in good fun, he said.
“I see clients from across Delco,” Rabena, who grew up in Wallingford, said.
He said he’s wanted to post a video showing off the accent for a while as part of his effort to show strength and conditioning training can be fun in addition to the hard work needed for result.
Creating a good culture around the gym is important to making people feel comfortable, which is integral in achieving fitness goals.
Rabena’s video as of publication time has nearly 1,100 likes and more than 35,000 vies on Instagram.
