Chris Wilder backed as the perfect man to turn around Arsenal or Manchester United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder deserves to be considered for the Premier League’s top jobs, according to Tony Cascarino.

Arsenal and Manchester United are struggling under Unai Emery and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer respectively and the usual names are being linked with the jobs – Jose Mourinho and Massimiliano Allegri among them – should they become available.

But Cascarino is amazed Wilder isn’t being talked about as a man who could lead the likes of Arsenal and United, suggesting that it’s only snobbery which prevents such clubs taking a chance on someone like him.

The Englishman has been working miracles at Sheffield United for some time, guiding them from the foot of League One to SIXTH in the Premier League, despite a relative lack of resources.

And Wilder has done it in style, ripping up the narrative on the newly-promoted Blades as a negative, pragmatic proposition.

His revolutionary tactical approach, featuring overlapping centre-backs, has caught the Premier League off guard and Cascarino reckons he deserves a crack at one of the big guns.

“Man United job, Arsenal job – Chris Wilder? Absolutely,” Cascarino said.

“There would be a snobbery around football that would go for Allegri or Mourinho. But I’m like, ‘No, I’d rather go with Chris Wilder.’

“He knows football, he’s a proper football person. Like Sir Alex Ferguson, Jurgen Klopp at Mainz, Pep Guardiola at Barcelona B – he’s shown what he can do.

“I believe there are managers in lower league football who are very gifted and deserve an opportunity. Chris has gone through the whole lot.”

Nonetheless, it seems Mourinho is the front-runner for the Arsenal job should the Gunners decide to sack Emery.

According to The Times, Mourinho and Arsenal head of football Raul Sanllehi had dinner together earlier this week, although this has since being denied by Arsenal.

Reports claim Emery is fighting to save his job following the disappointing 1-1 draw with Wolves on Saturday.
