El Clasico disrupted by thousands of pro-Catalan independence protesters outside Camp Nou ahead of Barcelona vs Real Madrid

Wednesday night’s ‘El Clasico’ fixture between Barcelona and Real Madrid was disrupted by pro-Catalan protesters.

The fixture was initially scheduled to take place in October, but increasing violence in the city meant LaLiga officials had to move it back.

However, thousands of protesters have now gathered outside of the Camp Nou to make their voices heard.

Despite the heavy police presence, major avenues near the stadium were blocked and disrupted traffic.

Secretive Catalan protest group Democratic Tsunami organised the pre-match protests in the hope of peacefully negotiate Catalonia’s right to self-determination and achieve freedom for the jailed separatists.

There are also reports the game will be disrupted by thousands of black beach balls being thrown onto the pitch by the Catalan protestors.

With hundreds of millions of people watching the game around the world, any protest captured would gain wide-scale attention.

One such event, according to Barcelona-based newspaper La Vanguardia, is that protesters plan to make inflatable beach balls ‘rain on the pitch’.

It is believed the significance of the black beach balls is to represent the rubber balls fired at protesters during the fight for independence, which saw a number of Catalan independence leaders sentenced and jailed for their part in it.

The unrest was initially caused after Spain’s Supreme Court sentenced nine Catalan separatist leaders to up to 13 years in prison two months ago.
