Snakes are known to represent a dual symbol of good and evil and are the oldest, mythological figure used in rituals and black magic activities. India was and is still known as a country where magic and witchcraft is allegedly practised.
While many argue that their beliefs are more about faith than superstition, these rituals are followed in innumerable houses, irrespective of their urban or rural location. Some of the very basic rituals include not going ahead when a black cat passes the road, not stepping on any ‘diyas’ or ‘lemons’ kept at a crossroad during festivals. Eating ‘curd’ preceding an important chore is considered auspicious while eating a sweet beforehand is not.
