Anthony Lopes had a night to forget as Lyon fell to a 2-1 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.
With just five minutes remaining, the goalkeeper inadvertently threw the ball to Benfica midfielder Pizzi, who hit a first-time shot into an empty net from 35 yards.
It was a calamitous error from Lopes, whose side looked set for a draw after former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay’s 70th minute goal cancelled out Rafa Silva’s early opener.
Despite being bottom of Group G after three games, Benfica are only three points behind leaders RB Leipzig, who came from behind to beat Zenit Saint Petersburg on the same night.
Lyon boss Rudi Garcia has backed Lopes to bounce back from his costly mistake.
He said: “I haven’t spoken to Antho yet because he went straight to the anti-doping control, but as soon as I see him I’ll comfort him.
“We’re with him. Everyone can make mistakes. I have every confidence in him to earn us a lot of points, as he does every season.”
Lopes is highly respected at Lyon and has made 222 Ligue 1 appearances since graduating from the club’s academy in 2012.
The 29-year-old has also been capped seven times by Portugal.
