Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fears he could be one game away from the sack, according to reports.
Manchester United have had a miserable start to the season, winning only two of their opening eight Premier League games to sit 12th in the table.
Having picked up just nine points out of a possible 24, this is United’s worst start to a campaign for 30 years.
Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, insisted a fortnight ago that Solskjaer retains the full backing of the club.
However, according to The Times, Solskjaer fears his position could be under serious threat should he lose his next game – against Liverpool.
United host their bitter rivals at Old Trafford after the international break and few would expect anything but a comfortable win for Jurgen Klopp’s men based on current form.
While Woodward and the Glazer family are understood to be keen to give the Norwegian time to turn things around, Solskjaer is said to be seriously concerned that a heavy defeat to the league leaders could well signal the end of his reign.
The Sun has even claimed that Solskjaer told his players as much after the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday, reportedly saying ‘you’re going to get me the sack’ in an angry dressing room blast.
The 46-year-old, an icon at United owing to his illustrious playing career, had an outstanding record after being drafted in on an interim basis following Jose Mourinho’s sacking in December 2018.
But since being handed the reins on a permanent basis in March, their form has nosedived.
Solskjaer has picked up just four wins from 16 matches and has the lowest win rate of any United manager since Dave Sexton, who was boss from 1978-81.

Having seen United lose to struggling Newcastle, Sam Allardyce reckons English football’s most successful club could even be RELEGATED this season.
He told talkSPORT: “It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that they could catastrophically fall into more problems if confidence goes and injuries stay like they are.
“Players tend not to get as fit as quick as they would do when things are going well, that’s an absolute fact.
“There’s the disturbance of Pogba wanting away and who will pop up next saying, ‘I see this going the wrong way, I want to leave’?
“Manchester United do not have enough goals and you can see it becoming a struggle. Hopefully it’s not a struggle down the bottom end, but they’re certainly heading that way.
“Ole’s got a big job, I know they it’s a rebuilding time and it is a rebuilding time, but you can’t get rid of your best goalscorer in the squad and not replace him. That’s a huge problem.”
