BROOKHAVEN TOWN, NY — As dry conditions continued, area firefighters responded to a series of small brush fires across Brookhaven Town this past weekend, with Arson Squad detectives investigating at least one of them, Suffolk police said.
A small brush fire broke out on the North Shore Rail Trail in Rocky Point Friday at around 3:30 p.m., and Arson detectives responded to the scene, according to police.
Earlier in the day, at around 9:05 a.m., some leaves caught fire on Olive Street in Rocky Point.

Another small brush fire in Yaphank at around 4 a.m. on Sunday, then another on Rockledge Path in Port Jefferson at around 1:24 p.m., and one on Bloomington Street in Medford at around 1:35 p.m.
A small brush fire was also reported on a baseball field in Medford at around 3:16 p.m. on Sunday.

Last week, the eastern Long Island region saw a spike in brush fires.
Firefighters responded to a 14-alarm blaze that moved quickly toward houses in Medford before it was doused by multiple fire departments.
Another large fire also broke out in Baiting Hollow.
A series of at least three fires are being investigated by Suffolk Arson Squad detectives.

A volunteer firefighter was also arrested in connection with another wildfire in Medford.
The largest fire to date in the New York region has been dubbed the Jennings Creek Wildfire, which is on the border of New York and New Jersey.
It was during that fire that an 18-year-old forest ranger was killed in the efforts to extinguish it.
A state-wide burn ban remains in effect until Nov. 30.
