Marin Expands Free Narcan Vending Machine Network

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County has placed multiple new vending machines equipped to dispense the overdose reversal drug naloxone for free at multiple locations.

In a news release Tuesday, officials said the new “NaloxBoxes” were strategically placed in accessible areas across the county. The county’s Health & Human Services Department worked with OD Free Marin and other community partners to expand the network of freely available Narcan nasal spray ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day on Saturday.

The drug can help restore breathing in a person experiencing an opioid overdose, and learning how to administer it does not require advanced training.

“Vending machines are a great way to make sure everyone has access to Narcan, in a no-questions-asked, cost-free, and equitable way,” said Dr. Matt Willis, Marin County’s Public Health Officer. “Everyone engaged in OD Free Marin is pitching in. Fire stations, health clinics, hospitals, community organizations, and government agencies have all stepped forward to host Narcan distribution.”

According to the county, opioid overdoses are the leading cause of death among Marin residents 55 and under. Officials say having naloxone readily available is the most effective way to prevent potentially fatal overdoses.
