BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A sleeping resident was awoken to a fire in his home thanks to a working smoke alarm, said Country Hills Fire Chief Patrick Doherty.
The fire was reported at 79 Poplar Street at 9:13 a.m.
One resident was home and asleep on the first floor when the fire started. The smoke alarm woke him up, said Doherty.

The resident and his dog were able to escape the home, said Bridgewater Police Lt. Frederick J. Brittain III.
No injuries were reported.

The investigation determined that the cause of the fire was not suspicious and a preliminary finding revealed that it was caused by an outlet being utilized by an air conditioning window unit, said Brittain III.
Emergency responders included: County Hill FD, Green Knoll FD, Gradley Gardens FD, Raritan FD, Manville FD, Finderne FD, North Branch FD, RWJ Rescue Squad and Bradley Gardens Rescue Squad.
