WALTHAM, MA — The Waltham City Council, fresh off a snowy inauguration day, hosted a short meeting to finalize another piece of the puzzle for the 2024 session.
On Monday, Waltham City Council President John McLaughlin appointed Ward 5 Councilor Joseph LaCava as the council’s Vice President.

As per the council rules, the City Council President can appoint a vice president to a one-year term. However, the City Council does have to confirm the appointment.

McLaughlin sought to appoint LaCava to the role. LaCava was first elected in 2018 to serve Ward 5, McLaughlin explained.
“He rose to a leadership position in this chamber soon after he election,” he said.

LaCava served as the Chair of Economic and Community Development, and later as the Chair of the Finance Committee. Now, as Vice President, he will chair the city’s Committee of the Whole.
“He has approached his responsibilities on this council always well prepared, well versed in our council rules with an aptitude for running a meeting seamlessly,” McLaughlin said. “We would be very well served with Councilor LaCava as our Vice President.”
The move was confirmed by the council, and LaCava will serve as Vice President for the 2024 session.
