Cardiff City 1-1 Fulham: Harry Arter sent off on return to south Wales as Bluebirds and Cottagers play out frantic draw

Two goals in the space of four first-half minutes saw two of last season’s relegated Premier League sides in Cardiff City and Fulham play out a 1-1 draw at The Cardiff City Stadium.

Josh Murphy’s opener was cancelled out by Aleksandar Mitrovic’s close-range finish as the Cottagers missed out on the chance to go just a point off Championship leaders Leeds United.

The match also saw Fulham midfielder Harry Arter sent off for two bookable offences in as many minutes on his return to south Wales.

Scott Parker’s side enjoyed 75 per cent possession before Arter’s dismissal but were forced to hold on for a point by the end.

The visitors controlled the first-half, with Mitrovic forcing Bluebirds keeper Alex Smithies into making two good saves.

However, it was Neil Warnock’s men who broke the deadlock with a rapid counter-attack move.

Aden Flint dispossessed Ivan Cavaleiro before slipping through a pinpoint through ball to Murphy, who ran clear and struck the ball into the bottom corner on 42 minutes.

But Fulham were level on the stroke of half-time as Cavaleiro made up for his mistake by providing Mitrovic with a tap-in from a low cross.

After the break, the game appeared to be drifting into a quiet draw but it suddenly came to life when Arter, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff, was given his marching orders by referee Tim Robinson.

Arter was booked for a late sliding challenge on Joe Ralls before receiving his second yellow for a dreadful dive.

It was all Cardiff from that point and captain Sean Morrison almost won it for them late on but his header bounced just wide.
