talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan wants to remind everyone he was kind of a big deal as a player before his chairman days.
After mentioning his football past on Tuesday’s Jim White show, Jordan wanted to make it very clear he is actually pretty decent on the pitch as well as in the boardroom, and even made history at the new Wembley Stadium… sort of.
Jordan played in the Crystal Palace and Chelsea academies as a boy, but was released by the Blues when he was 16.
He says he ‘had the talent’ to make it as a professional player was ‘wasn’t interested mentally’ in forging his career. Instead, he swapped his tracksuit for a shirt and tie and entered the business world, took charge of the Eagles and eventually ended up in the talkSPORT studios – lucky us!
He later pulled on the Palace shirt again in a number of appearances in charity games when he was in charge of his boyhood club and even took part in one of the first test events of the new Wembley.
Jordan played in a first game in front of spectators at the newly constructed stadium in 2007, for the Geoff Thomas Foundation Charity XI against the Wembley Sponsors Allstars.
And he scored the SECOND ever goal at the new Home of Football!
Palace legend Mark Bright actually scored the first – worth remembering for a pub quiz – and some actually argue Jordan’s strike should have gone down as an own goal, but that won’t stop him claiming it.
And, as you’d expect, he’s very humble about the whole situation…

Jim White: “Are you actually having us believe that you were a bit of a footballer at one time?”
Simon Jordan: “I was, mate! Go see the second ever goal scored at the new Wembley Stadium.
“Who scored it? ME!
“Who was it past? Neville Southall. Who put me through? Graeme Le Saux. Class, mate.
“I played with Michael Thomas, remember Michael Thomas? He played in that famous yellow shirt for Arsenal in 1989 and scored that goal at Anfield (in the final game of the 1988/89 season, as the Gunners famously won 2-0 to pip Liverpool to the Division 1 title). Myself and Michael were in the same team at Chelsea and played in a Sunday league team together.
“So I’m not having you believe I was a decent footballer – I WAS a decent footballer!”
Jim White: “And then you became a venture capitalist…”
Simon Jordan: “No… then I went off in a different direction and OWNED a football club.”
Jim White: “There you go, what a life.”
