Premier League clubs set for talks over summer transfer window closure dates

Premier League clubs are set to hold talks over changing the summer transfer window next month.

This summer’s window closed on August 8 at 5pm, just over 24 hours before Liverpool’s opening day defeat of Norwich.

Sky Sports claim ‘several’ sides are keen to push back the deadline and will raise concerns when representatives from each Premier League club meet on September 12.

It is understood a formal vote will not occur next month, but it could happen in November or the new year.

A majority vote is needed to change the date and time of the summer transfer window.

In 2017, Manchester City, Manchester United, Swansea and Watford voted against the current dates of the window closure, while 14 voted in favour of a change and Burnley abstained.

Premier League clubs still face difficulty in keeping their top stars with the European transfer window open until September 2.

Tottenham stars Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen, who are both in the final year of their respective contracts, could leave Spurs next month.

Meanwhile, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba remains a top target for Real Madrid.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp have expressed their frustration at the early transfer window closure for Premier League clubs.

Pochettino said: “I think he [Spurs chairman Daniel Levy] and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake.

“I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

“We need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League.”

Klopp added: “I don’t care when it closes, I only think it must close at the same time [as Europe].

“You want a team not only together but together and focused on the future, but that is not possible as long as there is a door open.

“I don’t understand why this decision is not already reviewed at least. At first it was a good idea but it didn’t work out so let’s change it again.”
