As soon as JBL announced that he’s leaving the SmackDown Live commentary team, fans began speculating about the reasoning behind the former WWE Champion’s departure, and whether not it had anything to do with the Mauro Ranallo situation.
According to a report made by Pro Wrestling Sheet, JBL informed WWE that he wouldn’t be re-signing with them back in May, shortly after the Ranallo situation began.
But, according to a new report by Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, JBL was planning on leaving WWE as far back as October of last year.
“Sources close to the situation informed Sports Illustrated that the decision for Layfield to exit the WWE began 11 months ago when his contract expired last October,” Barrasso said. “Layfield put in his notice well before rumors and allegations were hurled in his direction during Mauro Ranallo’s sudden disappearance from the WWE.”
