Liverpool vs Arsenal: Why how each team does on the left flank could decide who wins

The only two teams to have won both of their Premier League games this season face off this weekend as Liverpool welcome Arsenal to Anfield on Saturday.

Something’s got to give and you can listen to commentary of the match LIVE on talkSPORT from 5:30pm – the third of our three live commentaries on GameDay.

And if there’s one thing that is almost guaranteed whenever Liverpool and Arsenal play each other it’s goals.

In fact, of the last seven times the two sides have met, six of them have produced four or more goals.

Goalless draws are pretty rare between the Reds and the Gunners too with only five 0-0’s happening in the 54 Premier League meetings they’ve had.

But just because there have been lots of goals between Liverpool and Arsenal in previous seasons doesn’t mean that there will definitely be goals this time around.

However, talkSPORT.com has looked at this season’s stats on WhoScored.com and Understat.com and it looks as though this match is destined for goals, goals, goals.

Although they’ve a 100 per cent record both Liverpool and Arsenal have looked a bit vulnerable defensively.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have conceded an average of 13 shots per game, while the Gunners have conceded an average of 13.5 shots per game, suggesting there will be plenty of chances on offer – leaving them amongst the worst at repelling chances so far this season.

In terms of attacking, we noticed an interesting trend that could see a lot of action when Arsenal attack though.

They had six shots from the left-hand side of the pitch against Burnley while also trying their luck on the left a few times in their opening weekend victory against Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have looked slightly more vulnerable on their right-hand side so don’t be surprised if Trent Alexander-Arnold is kept busy by the likes of Nicolas Pepe or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But by the same token, Arsenal do look weak on their right and although Liverpool’s attacks have been largely central, they’ll surely see how Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who is not a natural full-back, will be able cope with the in-form Sadio Mane on Liverpool’s left.

And as for Mane and that dangerous front line he plays in alongside Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, they’ve all experienced joy against Arsenal in the past.

Firmino has scored in all four home matches he’s played against the Gunners, while Mane has scored in all three home matches he’s faced Arsenal as a Liverpool player and Salah has two against them, scoring in both games he’s faced Arsenal at Anfield.

It could be a very interesting duel decided on diagonally opposite sides of the pitch.
