Toby Alderweireld Tottenham contract explained and why Man United must act now to land him for £25m

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham has been the subject of much debate over the past 18 months.

But it now appears he’ll be staying at Spurs for the 2019/20 season unless a club acts fast and triggers his much-discussed buyout clause.

Alderweireld has been on Manchester United’s radar for some time and a release clause in his Spurs contract has put him up for sale for the enticing amount of £25million.

However, the clause is set to expire meaning Tottenham will be free to demand as much as they like for their important 30-year-old defender.

Toby Alderweireld: His contract clause explained

When Alderweireld left Atletico Madrid in 2015, he signed a four-year contract with Tottenham with the option of a further year.

That ran until this summer of 2019 but in January Spurs triggered the fifth year, meaning the contract runs until 2020.

That activated the £25m release clause which was in affect from the start of the 2019 summer transfer window.

The clause runs until the final two weeks of the current market so the club will have time to find a replacement should Alderweireld leave.

As this summer’s transfer window will close early on August 8, Tottenham are in a good position.

The buyout will expire on midnight on the evening of Thursday, July 25 meaning clubs will have to act fast to land the Belgian on the cheap.

While transfer windows around Europe will remain open for longer, the clause will remain the same, meaning Spurs can demand want that like.

Toby Alderweireld: What has been said?

Alderweireld, who has been linked with Man United and several other top European clubs, discussed his future this week.

Speaking after Tottenham’s 3-2 pre-season win over Juventus, he said: “Yes, that’s my focus [playing for Spurs].

“In football, everything can go quick but my focus is on Spurs and to be ready for the start of the season.

“I think the manager knows I am committed to the club and the team but you never know in football.

“A game like Sunday I was captain – so that shows the manager has trust in me and I’m showing the right attitude.

“My focus is on Spurs and I try to deliver the job I need to do – I’m happy and that’s it. In my head I will be playing for Spurs.”

Speaking about United’s pursuit of Harry Maguire, Dean Saunders thinks the club should focus on the cheaper Tottenham defender.

“Would you take Toby Alderweireld for £25million or Harry Maguire for £80million? You can’t get your money back on Alderweireld, he’s 30, but he’s probably a better player right now,” he told talkSPORT.
