Women’s World Cup: Incredible reason Brazil legend Marta pointed to her boots after scoring opener against Australia

Brazil superstar Marta pointed to her boots after scoring a record 16th Women’s World Cup goal on Thursday.

The 33-year-old forward, who is widely regarded as the best women’s player ever, netted the opener from the spot in Brazil’s 3-2 defeat to Australia.

And in her celebrations she pointed to her boots, sporting a gender equality symbol.

Her boot sponsorship deal expired last year and the veteran striker has since refused to sign a new one, saying brands are not offering sponsorship deals on a level par with male players.

Instead of reaching an agreement, she has opted to sport a symbol for gender equality on her boots during the World Cup.

Marta’s goal on Thursday made her the first player to ever score at five different World Cups.

The strike also made her the first player to score at five different World Cups, while her tally of 16 means she now shares the record for most World Cup goals alongside German Miroslav Klose.
