Speaking to reporters in the press conference after PSG’s Coupe de France final defeat to Rennes, 6-5 on penalties, manager Thomas Tuchel sought to explain this loss.

“This is difficult explain, I must say, also for me. We started very well, very structured, with lots of qualities and lots of chances. For me, it was a huge disappointment to lose the 2nd half 1-0 – I don’t have an explanation, I have the impression that in the dressing room at half-time, we were happy, not worried about the fact that it was an open match, thanks to us, it was our fault that the match was open. At 2-1, it was not a 3-0, 4-0 and I felt like we were not attentive to that fact. How we started the 2nd half, it was not with the same energy that we started the 1st half. At 2-2 okay they stayed compact a lot, we controlled the match but only after 2-2 again. And it was not possible for us to score again. For a lot of minutes. Ok, after that, it is always possible to lose, but to explain why it is maybe a bit too early and very difficult.”
“It is too early to do a post-mortem on this, I will have to think for several days like each time we have to be honest with ourselves and what happened. This is not an easy situation or moment – we lost our intensity after the winter break. And it is also a situation for weeks and weeks now without players and we have to think it all over. These are the results and we are not happy with them.”
“For me, it felt like they were too many fouls without yellow card, I know it is the spirit of the game to let things play… we were fragile. We lacked the instinct to go and get the 3rd or 4th goal. After the second, we missed a bit here, there and everywhere and that gives me a feeling that we are a bit fragile. We have a lot of chances, not only in attack but setting ourselves defensively, how to protect a lead, how we play our possession game, how we close spaces, we are not clinical. Maybe at 2-0 we try to do things that are harder, but you don’t do that in decisive games that matter. We were not aware that it is always possible to lose your confidence and to lose the match.”
