Reston Parkway Bridge Repairs At Toll Road Extend Into Next Week

RESTON, VA — Motorists can expect delays on Reston Parkway/Route 602 at Sunset Hills Road/Route-675E to continue until Monday afternoon due to emergency bridge work, according to VDOT.

A truck traveling southbound on Reston Parkway to the eastbound entrance ramp to the Dulles Toll Road in Reston struck the bridge on Monday morning, June 10, according to VDOT.

“The Reston Parkway bridge sustained damage to a couple of the bridge deck beams and other elements,” Alex Liggitt, VDOT’s communications manager for the Northern Virginia, told Patch on Thursday. “The left lane of southbound Reston Parkway was closed to prevent vehicles from putting weight on the damaged beams.”

VDOT shares responsibility with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority for maintaining certain parts of the bridge. The damaged portion of the bridge fulls under MWAA’s responsibility to repair, according to Liggitt.

“We have been actively working with them to facilitate the repair and set a repair timeline,” he said. “In the meantime, the team is working on a plan to temporarily repurpose the right-only ramp lane into a right and thru lane to regain some of our original traffic capacity. That will likely occur next week. Our operations engineering team has been monitoring and retiming the signals for both ramps as well as Sunset Hills Road to alleviate some of the queues.”
