At least 13 people were left injured after being attacked by a leopard in Assam’s Jorhat district on Monday.
The incident occurred around Rain Forest Research Institute located at Chenijan near Teok in the Jorhat district.
The leopard was found moving around the campus of the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI) in Chenijan area of the district since early morning.

Video of leopard attack goes viral
The residents of the campus informed the forest department and a team rushed to the spot to capture the animal.
The big cat attacked 10 residents of the campus and three forest personnel, before fleeing the area.
The injured people were admitted to a hospital and their condition was stated to be stable.
Several videos have surfaced online showing the leopard moving around the campus.

In one of the videos, the leopard can be seen jumping over a barbed wire fence and attacking a four-wheeler.

In another video, it was seen taking shelter near the staircase of a residential quarter.
Leopard yet to be caught
RFRI is surrounded by acres of forests and the leopard is suspected to have come out of there.
Forest personnel made several attempts to tranquilise the leopard but the big cat is still at large.
“When our team reached the area, the leopard attacked two of our staff. Our second team also reached the spot and we are monitoring the situation and trying to tranquillize the leopard. Three of our teams are here now,” a forest official said.
Two leopard attacks in a day
The leopard attack in Jorhat happened just a day after two similar incidents were reported in the state.

In the first case, a man was grievously injured by a big cat in Guwahati’s Ganeshpara area.
The victim was attacked when we went to a bath near a well at his residence.
Another person was left injured by a leopard in Assam’s Sonari on Sunday.
The incident took place in Gowala Pothar where the leopard attacked a daily wage worker leaving him critically injured.
Human-leopard conflict in Assam’s tea gardens
The rise in human-leopard conflicts has been a major issue in Assam, including in the state capital Guwahati and the tea gardens.

Leopards have been documented as frequently venturing into the tea garden areas in search of food which include domestic animals.
On December 16 an adult male leopard that was terrorising residents was captured in the Bokul Tea Estate in Dibrugarh.
In November, a leopard was found dead in the Maijan tea estate in Dibrugarh.
