Liverpool owners want club to win Premier League title for the next two seasons as they plan domestic dominance with gradual rebuild

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have outlined their plans for domestic dominance as the club closes in on a first ever Premier League title.

The Reds saw off Watford on Saturday to continue their seemingly unstoppable march towards top-flight glory and maintain a 10-point gap over nearest challengers Leicester, who were held by Norwich.

Last season, Liverpool missed out on the title by a single point after battling Manchester City right until the final day.

According to The Athletic, FSG want the club to win the league this campaign and the following before a rebuilding of the squad begins to take shape.

By this time, as changes are made gradually, it is hoped a number of talented academy players will start staking a claim for a first team spot, while new signings will be identified to replace key players as they get older.

This means that, as long as the club do not veer too far off course when players are replaced, a drop in league position will be accepted.

This seems to be a major reason for manager Jurgen Klopp committing his future to the club by signing a new contract.

In his four years in charge of the club, Liverpool have reached three European finals, winning one – the Champions League.

Klopp’s new deal keeps the manager at Anfield until 2024, with his assistants, Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders, also agreeing similar contracts to remain on Merseyside.

“For me personally this is a statement of intent, one which is built on my knowledge of what we as a partnership have achieved so far and what is still there for us to achieve,” the 52-year-old said.

Liverpool have won 18 league titles in their history, but the last came in 1990 when Kenny Dalglish was in charge – two years before the Premier League’s first season – and Klopp feels there is more to come as the club seek to get back to the sort of success that saw them dominate in England during the 1970s and 1980s.

“I see the development of the club and the collaborative work that continues to take place, I feel my contribution can only grow,” he continued.

“People see what happens on the pitch as a measure of our progress and although it is the best measure, it’s not the only measure. I have seen the commitment from ownership through to every aspect and function of the club you can think of.

“When the call came in autumn 2015, I felt we were perfect for each other; if anything, now I feel I underestimated that. It is only with a total belief that the collaboration remains totally complementary on both sides that I am able to make this commitment to 2024.”
