Retailers could sue the owners of one of Britain’s largest regional shopping centres which was forced to close last week and will remain shut over Christmas. The 40-outlet Castlepoint centre in Bournemouth, whose stores include Marks & Spencer, B&Q, J Sainsbury and Asda, was closed following safety concerns over its car park. It is not expected to re-open until 2006. Retailers anticipate trading losses of more than £60 million.
Many contacted by the Sunday Telegraph are considering legal action. “We are keeping a very close eye on what our sales would be. We are absolutely going to take some sort of action,” said Asda. A spokesperson for Castlepoint Limited Partnership, which runs the centre, said that the management would stand by its contractual obligations to tenants.
