Chelsea starlet Mason Mount has been backed to one day ply his trade at either Barcelona or Real Madrid by a former Vitesse team-mate.

Mount has emerged as a first-team regular under Frank Lampard’s tutelage at Stamford Bridge and is leading the youth revolution taking place at the south west London club.

He has scored four times in 12 appearances in all competitions so far and has been named in the last two England squads, starting in the Euro 2020 qualifier loss against Czech Republic.

Mount spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan at Vitesse, scoring 13 goals, before spending the following year at Derby.

Mitchell van Bergen, now of Heerenveen, played alongside the 20-year-old at Vitesse and believes he would not look out of place at either one of the La Liga giants.

“I look at Chelsea matches more often because of him,” he told NOS.

“He got his chance there and took hold of it. And he’s also knocking on the door of the English national team. That doesn’t surprise me.

“Mason is going to reach the absolute top. In the Premier League he will be a complete player and I see him eventually ending up at Barcelona or Real Madrid. I think he will fit there.”
