Manchester United ejected fan sat in home section during clash against Liverpool over alleged racist abuse

A fan was ejected from Old Trafford during Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool over alleged racist abuse.

United have said they are investigating as a matter of priority and it is understood the police have been informed.

A United spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident at yesterday’s game where an individual in the home section has allegedly engaged in racial abuse.

“The individual was identified and ejected from the stadium. We are currently investigating the matter as a priority.

“Racism and all forms of discrimination are completely unacceptable and do not reflect the values of our club.”

It is understood the situation could lead to an indefinite ban.

A Liverpool spokesperson said: “Liverpool Football Club takes all allegations of this manner extremely seriously and will support the strongest possible action being taken against anyone found to be responsible.

“At this stage it would be inappropriate to comment further on the alleged incident itself other than to welcome the swiftness with which Manchester United have launched an investigation and support their stance that racism and discrimination must be treated with zero tolerance.”

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw with Adam Lallana’s late effort cancelling out Marcus Rashford’s first half goal.

Premier League leaders Liverpool were overwhelming favourites going into the game but fell behind when the England forward got on the end of Daniel James’ excellent cross from the right.

However, the United faithful were forced to put their celebrations on hold as the goal was subject to a VAR review following claims from the away side that Divock Origi was fouled in the build-up.

The goal was given though much to the outrage of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp told talkSPORT: “Obviously we’ve spoken a lot about the technology, but it’s not the technology that makes the mistake because we had three camera angles.

“It’s then the human being and I don’t blame Mr Atkinson because he let the situation run because we have VAR.

“You saw it in his face, he let the game go because we have VAR so you don’t have to whistle it back.

“They scored the goal immediately after. He knew it was not right, and then the VAR says it’s not [a] clear and obvious [mistake].

“This is a general thing, and it’s not just with Liverpool or Manchester United, that needs to be sorted.”

United were edging closer to a famous win but Lallana found space and got the equaliser following the Red Devils’ inability to clear Andy Robertson’s low cross.

The result leaves Liverpool have their lead at the top of the league cut to six points after Manchester City’s win at the weekend while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are 13th.
