EFL new boys Salford City host Aston Villa’s Under-21s side tonight in the first match of the Leasing.com Trophy group stages.
Portsmouth won the cup last term, beating Sunderland on penalties in the final and now the lower league tournament is set to begin again.
Salford and the Villa U21s are in Group C of the northern section with Tranmere but Bury have had to drop out following their EFL expulsion.
That means Tranmere will wait to begin their cup campaign and they’ll likely be watching events at Moor Lane this evening.
Salford have drawn four of their first five League Two games this term while Villa, 18th in the Premier League, will be keen to see their youngsters in action.
