Tony Cascarino has sent a warning to the Premier League big guns not to underestimate Manchester United this season, insisting they ‘are still a side to be feared’.
United got their campaign underway with a fine 4-0 victory over Chelsea, but that scoreline flattered their performance and their next results, a 1-1 draw with Wolves and a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, were perhaps a more accurate reflection on where Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s team currently stand.
Southampton vs Man United: Predicted line-ups for Premier League clash
Many are already writing the Red Devils off in the race for the top four this season, especially following their sixth-place finish in the Premier League last term.
But Cascarino insists there is still life in this Man United team, especially after a number of decent buys over the summer transfer window.
Speaking on Saturday’s Weekend Sports Breakfast, Casc said: “Ole Gunner Solskjaer has brought in three players this summer who have all done really well – Daniel James, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
“They didn’t play particularly well last week ,and that’s why they got beat by Crystal Palace. They didn’t play well enough and De Gea makes a mistake.
“But Manchester United are still a side to be feared.”
Solskjaer’s men will be looking to bounce back from that surprise loss to Palace when they take on Southampton in Saturday’s 12:30pm kick off – which is LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on talkSPORT!

But, ahead of the match, the boss admitted they are a player short up front – and could do with a ‘young Ole’ in the box.

United cut their attacking roster this summer by allowing Romelu Lukaku, and then also Alexis Sanchez, to leave to Inter Milan and Solskjaer couldn’t find the right replacement for the big Belgian.
“As I said on the way back from [pre-season] tour, we were still looking for one replacement for Romelu if he went,” said the Norwegian. “We are one down, to be fair, but we just didn’t find the right one, we didn’t find the answer that we wanted.”
United were linked with a number of frontmen during the end of the English transfer window, including former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente who was available on a free, while former hitman Zlatan Ibrahimovic also insisted he could ‘easily’ play in the Premier League again and said, albeit jokingly: ‘If United need me, I’m here’.
And Cascarino believes United have dropped the ball massively by not replacing Lukaku this summer.
“I’m surprised they didn’t replace Lukaku with another striker if I’m honest.
“They don’t have an Aguero, a Kane, an Aubameyang, they don’t have that type of player.”
