Manchester United should NOT have sold Romelu Lukaku this summer, according to former Premier League manager Sam Alladryce.
The striker completed his long-awaited move to Italy this week after joining Inter Milan for a fee of £72million.
Lukaku made no secret of his desire to play in Italy and even took to training with former club Anderlecht before the move went through.
It has also given the Red Devils the chance to make up some funds spent this summer, having forked out over £140m on new signings.
However, Allardyce, who has managed seven different sides in the Premier League, said he would not have let Lukaku leave if he was in charge at United as it means the club’s attacking options look ‘a bit short’.
Allardyce told talkSPORT: “There’s been a little bit of grumbling about the lack of spending. I think the net spend has not quite been as good as the United fans expected.

“This is my point of view as a manager, nobody else’s; I wouldn’t have let Lukaku go because they had no replacement.
“Manchester United look a bit short up front and that is a problem.
“If you have the replacement then that’s fine but if you look at Manchester United’s front line then you say to yourself that it’s very talented but also very similar.
“I don’t think you need to be very experienced in the game to know that.
“It eludes to only one style of play… I find that rather strange when you consider the game today and it’s the diversity of the game which is what makes the Premier League so good.”
United kick off their 2019/20 Premier League campaign when they face top four rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Harry Maguire makes his Red Devils debut and the England international carries a hefty price tag with him having been bought for £80m from Leicester – a world-record fee for a defender.
And Allardyce said Maguire is likely to be feeling the pressure.
He added: “£80million, he’s had a full pre-season, he’s been waiting for this move. There will not be anyone out there more nervous than him.
“Manchester United bought him for playing out but when you haven’t got the ball you’re a central defender. You have to make fewer mistakes than any player other than the goalkeeper.
“Every team that wins the league or finishes in the top two has the best defensive record and we tend to forget that.
“If you look at what Pep Guardiola said [after Manchester City’s 5-0 win over West Ham], scoring five is great but he also said ‘we got a clean sheet.’”
