Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea were ‘too soft’ in their approach against Manchester United as Frank Lampard’s tenure as manager got off to the worst possible start with a 4-0 thumping at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Blues gave a decent account of themselves in the first half and were unfortunate to be behind, but after the break they failed to get any kind of foothold in the game, with a second-half defensive collapse sending them on the way to a heavy defeat.

Mourinho, the former Chelsea and United boss, was forthright in his views of the former’s display on the day he made his Sky Sports punditry debut.

He said: “I think they [Chelsea] were too soft, difficult to qualify them, they were not compact defensively.

“There was too much space to play in and not enough progression on the ball.

“They were never compact. You have to look at the distances between the defensive line, midfield, attack.

“I think United will find it much more difficult to play against teams with low defensive blocks.”

On Chelsea wasting possession in attacking areas, he added: “When you have dominance in ball possession you have to score goals.

“When you don’t do that, then you are more open to be caught in counter attacks and what Manchester United are good at especially with more mobile people like [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford, Alexis [Sanchez] is in transition.

“If you have the ball and you lose it, they kill you.”
