SEOUL – A South Korean consul general in Japan is said to be under police investigation on suspicion of sexually harassing a female subordinate, according to South Korean newspaper reports published Monday.
The career diplomat is aged between 50 and 59, according to the reports.
South Korea’s Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission is reported to have received a tip regarding the alleged harassment in around May and asked the police to launch the investigation.
The senior diplomat, currently under police questioning in South Korea, claims to have no memory of the alleged act, the Dong-A Ilbo daily reported.
The daily noted that the consul general, in a role at the forefront of efforts to resolve the Seoul-Tokyo conflict over Japan’s tightening of controls on exports to South Korea, is bogged down in the sexual harassment scandal. It also said the allegations could hint at wider problems at the South Korean Foreign Ministry.
