Newcastle had ten managers ahead of Steve Bruce on a list of potential replacements for Rafa Benitez, according to reports.

Sky Sports claims the Magpies’ new boss, who was appointed on Wednesday, did not even feature on the club’s original shortlist of candidates for the role.

The 58-year-old quit Sheffield Wednesday after just six months with the Championship side, who are considering legal action against Newcastle.

In a statement, Wednesday said: “The club is disappointed to learn via public statement issued by Newcastle United that it has appointed former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Steve Clemence.

“Regardless of the fact that the staff resigned from their positions with the club on Monday, there remains outstanding legal issues to be resolved between the club and the staff and Newcastle United. The club is currently considering its position and taking the appropriate legal advice.

“No further comment will be made by the club concerning this matter.”

Bruce, who grew up in Wallsend, penned a three-year deal upon his return to Tyneside.

Sam Allardyce recently revealed to talkSPORT that he was one of the men who turned down an approach from Newcastle.

He said: “I was very flattered that I was considered but it’s that thing… don’t go back.

“It never got to the type of talks people are suggesting but it wasn’t for me. I politely said no.”

According to the Daily Mail, the likes of Jose Mourinho, Eddie Howe and even Mark Hughes were ahead of Bruce on Newcastle’s managerial shortlist.
