Frank Lampard’s legendary status at Chelsea will not protect him from the sack at Stamford Bridge, believes Ally McCoist.
The Derby County boss has been given permission to speak to the Blues about their vacant managerial post, following Maurizio Sarri’s exit to Juventus.
His arrival, if it happens, will no doubt be met with a raucous fanfare from fans.
However, Lampard would return to the club during one of their most difficult periods in the Roman Abramovich era, with a two-window transfer ban meaning he may have to work with what he already has at Stamford Bridge.
The former midfielder’s work with a number of talented young players at Derby, including Chelsea aces Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori, has given supporters hope he can begin to finally give the club’s top academy stars some game time in the first team.
But McCoist has warned the boss he will not be immune from criticism for long if he doesn’t get off to a good start in west London.
“I guarantee you the majority of Chelsea supporters are saying: ‘Let’s take a look at this, we’ve got a transfer ban and Frank can get a few youngsters in the team’.
“That’s marvellous – but once you start not winning games, not winning trophies, not finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League and not winning the Europa league, people are going to change very, very quickly.
“Of course the fans will understand that he’s not going into the job at an ideal time and he’s a relatively young coach to take over one of the biggest and most successful clubs in recent years in the county.
“And no matter what happens, you can’t take away all his goals, titles and cup, that’ll never happen.
Adrian Durham asks how long Chelsea fans will stay behind Frank Lampard
“There will be a period where the Chelsea supporters will give Frank an extra bit of time and leeway, but if things don’t go Chelsea and Frank’s way, the inevitable will happen.
“Chelsea are one of the clubs in the county that generally don’t have coaches for a long period of time.
“It might be different with Frank and I hope it is different with Frank… but like every other coach, he will be judged on results.”
