The former midfielder has been given permission to talk to the Blues about taking the vacant manager’s job at Stamford Bridge, following Maurizio Sarri’s departure to Juventus.
The deal has been in the works for weeks, with Chelsea willing to pay £4million in compensation to bring the club legend back.
And Burley, who spent eight years at Stamford Bridge from 1989-1997, insisted Lampard is too inexperienced in management to take such a big role.
“This will work for work for a certain period in terms of knitting together and appeasing fans”, he told the Sports Bar.
“But ultimately, same as [Manchester] United and Solskjaer and anybody who brings in a former player with little experience, is it’s going to come down to the results.
“If your’re going to Stamford Bridge next season and Chelsea lose five or six on the bounce – and I’m not suggesting that could happen but it could. Then the fans are going to turn.”
Meanwhile, Derby County’s owner Mel Morris has admitted he still has hopes that Lampard will remain as manager of his club.
“So we talked about that and we both probably thought it would be some way off and, let’s face it, right now it’s still not a done deal.
“Let’s be blunt, as far as I’m concerned I’m hoping this guy is going to manage us next season. I’m not giving up hope on that at the moment.
“But you’d have to say at some point it will happen – whether it’s now or some point in the future.
