Birmingham City EXCLUSIVE: Ian Holloway open to succeeding Garry Monk as Blues manager

Ian Holloway has told talkSPORT he would be interested in becoming the new manager of Birmingham City – a club he claims to have ‘always loved’.

Blues are currently searching for their sixth manager in a little over two years after giving Garry Monk the boot this week.

Monk’s surprise sacking was announced on Tuesday, with the 40-year-old packing his bags after just 15 month in charge and despite saving the club from relegation.

Birmingham were hit with a nine-point deduction by the EFL for breaching financial rules last season, yet Monk managed to keep Blues away from the bottom three, ending the season 17th in the Championship table.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan criticised the decision to axe Monk as ‘ludicrous‘, and Holloway admitted he was stunned by the manager’s exit.

Holloway has been out of work, aside from his regular appearances on talkSPORT, since ending his second stint in charge of Queens Park Rangers in May 2018.

And asked if he would be interested in returning to the dugout to take the job at St Andrew’s, ‘Ollie’ told Jim White: “I’d talk to them, yes.

“I’ve always loved Birmingham City.

“I got a Christmas card from them when I was very, very young, saying they wanted me up there but was scared to go away from home. I’ve always had a good rapport with their crowd.

“Monk had a brilliant season and, I’ve got to be honest, [his sacking] was unbelievably shocking.

“It can only happen in football that you can do as well as that and end up losing your job, it’s weird.”
