Napoli fans have expressed their disgust at Maurizio Sarri – ripping down a plaque dedicated to their former boss – following his decision to take over the reins at Juventus.
Sarri, 60, was announced as the new manager of the Turin giants on Sunday after deciding to leave Chelsea having managed them for just one season.
And that has prompted an angry reaction among the Gli Azzurri faithful towards their former hero.
The sign, put up two years ago in the Bagnoli district of Naples, read ‘Hasta siempre, commander’ which translates as ‘Until always, commander’.
A statement, posted on the Facebook page of the Political Laboratory Iskra, explained the decision to dismantle the plaque.
It read: “We never wanted to confuse politics and support but our hearts are crying to read the bitterness of so many people, like us, who believed and had put their trust in someone to continue to believe in football.
“A trust that is regularly broken by market laws.
“When will we decide to no longer be client-subjects and will we begin to be consciously inhabitants and fans?
“How many more would we like to become attached to and then be disappointed by their choices?”
Gonzalo Higuain endured similar treatment to Sarri after swapping Naples for Turin back in July 2016.
Sarri, who won the Europa League and secured a top-three Premier League spot in his only season at Chelsea, is believed to have signed a deal worth £18m at Juventus.
The Italian’s deal at Juve runs until the summer of 2022, with Blues legend Frank Lampard widely expected to replace Sarri at Stamford Bridge.
